Police lay careless driving charge after crash at ION station

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A driver has been charged after a collision at an ION boarding station in Waterloo on Wednesday.

Grand River Transit (GRT) initially confirmed in a social media post that a vehicle struck an electrical box at Allen Station which prompted an ION train service disruption.

Police later said the crash happened just after 11 a.m. as a vehicle exited a private driveway in the area and the driver allegedly lost control, striking the ION station equipment.

ION train service was halted between the Laurier-Waterloo Park and Kitchener Market stations for several hours because of the crash. The disruption ended in the afternoon around 4 p.m.

Power at Allen Station remained impacted and GRT said it would take ‘some time’ to restore. Emergency lighting was brought in but passenger displays and fare vending machines remained offline.

Police said no one was hurt in the incident and a 79-year-old woman has been charged with careless driving.
