Community asked to share thoughts on Regional Police budget

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

As regional councillors take a look at the 2024 budget overview Wednesday afternoon, Regional Police are asking the community to mark their calendars for public consultations on their budget for next year.

In 2023, the budget rang in at over $214 million, an increase of $18 million compared to the previous year. It involved the hiring of 19 new officers.

At a police services board meeting in July, an increase of around 8 per cent was pitched for 2024 – which includes the hiring of 18 additional officers.

The board will put its stamp of approval on the budget mid-November, with regional council having its final say on the regional budget as a whole Dec. 13.

The public input sessions are being held on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m., and Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.

Both sessions will be one hour long, with delegates asked to pre-register online. Written submissions are also being accepted.
