A climate rally organized by 50 by 30 Waterloo Region will take place Saturday in Kitchener’s Victoria Park.
The protest is part of a global effort opposing the use of fossil fuels.
The local rally will feature speakers from various groups including the Council of Canadians, the Waterloo Region Labour Council, Faith Climate Justice and Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice.
Stephanie Goertz, a spokesperson for 50 by 30 Waterloo Region, told The Mike Farwell Show on Friday that the goal of the rally is to put pressure on governments on various issues impacting the environment.
“Once they feel the pressure from our community, from our businesses… then change happens faster,” said Goertz. “But until we have enough citizens and people stepping forward… it’s easy to not.”
The rally comes following a summer of record wildfires across the country and the recent scandal of land removal from the Greenbelt. Goertz said there are many other areas that could be used for housing development instead of the Greenbelt, such as abandoned warehouses and parking lots.
“Never should we be utilizing our Greenbelt and some of our more diverse habitats to put housing on,” said Goertz.
The rally will run from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Clock Tower.
