Cambridge to limit fireworks to three major holidays

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Cambridge has joined the growing number of cities limiting the use of fireworks to only three major holidays, with a specific time of the night to end the bangs and flashes.

Council voted Tuesday night to update the by-law to allow fireworks only on Victoria Day, Canada Day, and Diwali.

Fireworks can only be used on those days between dusk and 11 p.m.

The updated by-law removes the option for fireworks on the two days following each holiday if bad weather cancels a fireworks display on the holiday itself.

A statement from the City said, “These changes come following an increase in fireworks complaints during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

There was an increase in unsanctioned fireworks use when public gatherings were cancelled.

The fine for violating the fireworks by-law is $250 however, the City acknowledges it’s difficult to enforce and said by the time a by-law officer can get to an area where fireworks have been going off, they’ve ended, and the officer can’t find the exact location.

A staff review of how the new by-law is working out is due back to Council in mid-2024.
