Nic Hague brings the Stanley Cup back to Kitchener

The Stanley Cup made its way through Kitchener on Sunday.
Kitchener’s very own Nicolas Hague brought the ‘holy grail’ with him after coming off a Stanley Cup win with the Vegas Golden Knights in June. He is a former Jr. Kitchener Ranger and spent time with the Kitchener Dutchmen and Mississauga Steelheads. He was drafted by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the second round of the 2017 NHL draft.
The Stanley Cup was at the Activa Sportsplex from 10am until 2pm, where attendees got to meet with and get an autograph from the Knights defenseman, as well as take a picture with the cup itself. An estimated 2,000 people attended the event. Hague said he gets nostalgic every time he comes back to Kitchener.
“I think the greatest part about hockey is developing those lifelong friendships and I did a lot of that playing here growing up so it’s something that I’m thankful for,” he said.

The event included a charity BBQ for Kitchener minor hockey, road hockey and a silent auction for KidSport KW. John Cooper, the chair of the KW chapter of KidSport, said Hague donated all the items for the silent auction.
“He’s just an incredible young man,” said Cooper. “He played a lot of sports, so he knows the benefits… and the many values that kids get from that.”
One of the big fundraising event today is the @KidSportKW silent auction. Items up for grabs include a signed Nic Hague jersey, hockey stick and Vegas Golden Knights hat.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic told CityNews 570 that Hague’s win is a great addition to a local roster.
“It’s so wonderful to see a local athlete be so successful,” Vrbanovic said. “This summer we’ve almost become the city of champions with our winners in hockey, basketball and lacrosse.”
Vrbanovic hinted that there are also plans in the works to do a celebration event with NBA championship winner and Kitchener’s Jamal Murray in the near future.
