The first indigenous-led transitional housing is coming to the region.
The Kitchener Waterloo Urban Native Wigwam Project is taking the charge and offering temporary housing to those who identify as indigenous and are experiencing homelessness, which will include First Nations, Metis and Inuit.
The shelter space will be 24 hours, seven days a week, and will be able to offer space for 28 people.
Temporary housing will be available to single people, couples and potentially small families in emergencies with the goal of helping people transition to permanent housing.
The initiative is a collaboration with the Regional government, and comes from a $192.5 million dollar budget the region set aside for 2023 towards housing and homelessness.
The temporary housing will be located at 34 Bridgeport Road East in Waterloo and is expected to open this week.
