Fireworks bylaw reminders for Canada Day

Fireworks will light up the sky on Saturday as the nation celebrates Canada’s 156th birthday.

Cities in Waterloo Region are encouraging residents to keep safety in mind. There are also fireworks bylaws to consider.

Kitchener

The City of Kitchener Municipal Code states that fireworks can only be set off on privately-owned property before 11 p.m. on Canada Day, and not the day before or after. Residents must meet the setback requirements in order to set off fireworks.

Fireworks cannot be set off by anyone under 18, or on land owned by the city, including parks and schoolyards.

Waterloo

Those hoping to set off fireworks in Waterloo are allowed to do so on the holiday until 11 p.m., as well as one day before and one day after.

The fireworks must be set off by people 18 or older, and have to be what the City defines as family fireworks.

The City of Waterloo advises residents who have fireworks to notify neighbours so those neighbours can plan ahead.

“[The fireworks] display may be an uncomfortable event for them or their pets,” the City website says.

Cambridge

The City of Cambridge states that private fireworks displays are permitted until 11:59 p.m. on Canada Day. Those with a permit from the City are the only exception.

Fireworks can be set off any day within two days after the holiday in the case of inclement weather.

They are not allowed in public areas.

Safety recommendations are listed on the City’s website.

Those with fireworks complaints in the tri-cities should call the Waterloo Regional Police Service non-emergency line at 519-570-9777. If there is an emergency, residents should call 911.
