On Tuesday night, city councillors in Guelph heard from a long list of delegates who spoke out against the strong mayor powers coming to over two dozen cities later this week.
One of those residents was David, who encouraged council to unanimously vote against using the new provincial legislation.
“Then hold your noses, I would say, and find new ways to neutralize it in action.” David stated.
Another resident who spoke out was Susan, who called on the mayor to clarify his stance on strong mayor powers, and said she disagrees with Premier Ford’s assurance that the new powers are optional.
“Strong mayor powers are not a tool in a toolbox,” Susan told council. “They are a radioactive dirty bomb which will contaminate and blow apart local democracy,”
Guelph mayor Cam Guthrie is one of 26 mayors across the province being given strong mayor powers on July 1st.
The new legislation allows mayors to override specific council votes in a provincial effort to fast track housing development.
Guelph resident Lynn expressed gratefulness at the new legislation being rejected by many mayors across the province.
“It is so encouraging that so many mayors and cities have indicated that they do not wish to undermine the democratic process currently in place,” Lynn elaborated.
Another delegate told council that strong mayor powers will lead to a dysfunctional government.
“Surely, strong mayor powers weaken and minimize the voice of every Guelph citizen.” The resident remarked.
Strong mayor powers are set to take effect on July 1st.
