The recent stretch of hot, dry weather has fire officials in Cambridge and Kitchener on alert.
Both cities implemented a burn ban on Thursday afternoon.
It means all open and active burn permits have been revoked effective immediately, and no new permits will be issued or approved until further notice.
Those who violate the restrictions could be fined.
The burn bans were announced as smoke from forest fires in Ontario and Quebec led to deteriorating air quality.
A full burn ban was also issued in Waterloo Region’s townships earlier in the week.
