Police investigate fatal crash near Stone Road Mall in Guelph

By Mark Douglas

A driver is dead after losing control of his pick-up truck and running over a woman who was reading under a tree beside Stone Road Mall in Guelph.

Police say it happened around 3:30, Thursday afternoon, when the 64-year old man driving the truck suffered a medical episode behind the wheel.

His truck went off the road, hit the 32-year old woman by the tree, and then crashed into several parked vehicles in the parking lot mall.

Guelph Police say an off-duty nurse happened to be there and jumped in to help with lifesaving efforts — police do not specify if the nurse was helping the woman, the driver, or both.

An Ornge Air Ambulance was called in and flew the woman to a hosptial outside Guelph with lower-body injuries.

The driver of the pick-up was taken to Guelph General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say there was a female passenger in the pick-up who was not hurt.

No names have been released.

Investigators need to hear from any and all witnesses.
