Kitchener’s Jamal Murray wins big, local leaders react

It was a big night for Kitchener’s own Jamal Murray after the Denver Nuggets swept the Los Angeles Lakers in four games in the NBA western conference finals.

Murray, a point guard for Denver played a significant part in the game four win Monday night contributing 25 points.

While Denver fans we’re certainly happy at the results, excitement over the win carried over locally to Murrays hometown.

Kitchener Ward 2 Councilor Dave Schnider took to social media showing Murray support and said “The City of Kitchener is proud of you and our home town talent.”

Additionally, Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic also congratulated Murray tweeting “Jamal, you worked hard and had a dream to be more, and you did it.”

Vrbanovic spoke with CityNews 570 and discussed what Murray’s success means for Kitchener.

“Our community has been so immensely proud of Jamal throughout his basketball career. To see it happen to such a nice young man is just fantastic and inspiring to other young people in our community who have big goals as well.”

Vrbanovic said, Murray is someone who remembers his roots staying connected with the local community and often returns to visit Kitchener where is family still resides.

He hinted that local plans are in the works to celebrate Murray and the Nuggets in the NBA finals, the details of which will be announced in the near future.
