Waterloo spends $2.3 million on Woonerf, a shared-street concept

By CityNews Staff

Waterloo is admiring the wonder of the Woonerf.

A Woonerf is a shared-street concept first created by the Dutch that emphasizes walking, cycling, and socializing, with traffic control and slow speed limits.

The first of its kind in Waterloo was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Larch Street on Friday.

Jeff Henry, city councillor for Ward 6, was at the forefront of getting the project moving.

He told CityNews 570 that the Woonerf puts people first.

“It works at a human scale,” said Henry.  “Where people who are walking, rolling and cycling come first on the street, where people can linger and gather safely, they can connect, and they can enjoy life.”

The total cost of the project was $2.3 million.

The City of Waterloo contributed $1.8 million to the project, with $484,000 coming from the federal government.

Councillor Henry was joined at the ribbon cutting ceremony by outgoing Mayor Dave Jaworsky and Waterloo MP Bardish Chagger.

Mayor elect Dorothy McCabe also attended the event.
