Waterloo Public Library welcomes public to grand opening of Eastside Branch

By Luke Schulz

The Waterloo Public Library is hosting a Grand Opening event at their new Eastside Branch location at the RIM Park Manulife Sportsplex.

That location, located at 2001 University Ave. East is described as a “vibrant, contemporary space” made to reflect the community of the surrounding area — equipped with “soaring ceilings, inviting lounge areas, light-filled interiors and an outdoor nature courtyard.”

Members of the public are invited to join the festivities beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with a ribbon cutting event, while the day will include a variety of activities including giveaways of Eastside Branch bags, seed kits and buttons, a scavenger hunt and community art project, and a “Forest of Curiosities” installation: a 600+ square foot project designed as a “celebration of the natural spaces” around the branch.

A long standing collaboration between the Waterloo Public Library and the City of Waterloo, the Eastside project has been ongoing since 2015, with tender for construction awarded in September of 2020 to the tune of just over $7M.
