Province to spend $5M on new beds, clinical care programs at both Kitchener hospitals

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The provincial government has announced plans to spend $5 million to modernize and expand Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital.

Ontario's Health Minister Christine Elliott made the announcement in Kitchener on Thursday morning.

The redevelopment will add new patient beds, as well as expand clinical care programs, including cancer care, cardiac care, plus surgery and medical imaging.

“Supporting plans to redevelop Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital is one more way our government is building a stronger, more resilient health care system and ending hallway health care,” Elliott explained. “This investment will connect health care in the region and ensure the hospitals will be able to meet the growing health care needs of families in the community.”

The province has also committed $1 million to a study at Grand River Hospital, which is exploring intraoperative surgical technology that could improve outcomes for patients who require hip replacement surgery.

According to a news release, the tech is intended to increase the accuracy of the placement of implants, which could mean less recovery time for patients.
