Waterloo Regional Police Chief Larkin retiring, moving into position with RCMP (update)

Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin is retiring after 31 years of service.
The announcement was made Thursday afternoon by Regional Chair Karen Redman, who is also chair of the police services board.
Larkin started as a front-line constable with the service back in 1991.
“It has been a true honour to lead this organization over the past eight years and serve beside the incredible members who commit themselves each and every day to public safety and wellness,” Larkin said in a news release.
“As I reflect on my career, I am reminded of the sacrifices made by every member who took an oath to serve this community. I am also reminded of the success achieved through those sacrifices and am immensely proud and thankful for every member’s leadership and dedication.”
Larkin became chief in August 2014. He also spent time with the Guelph Police Service as deputy chief and chief.
Among his other high-ranking positions with WRPS, he served as superintendent of central division and executive officer to the chief.
A transition date will be worked out between Larkin and the police services board. An interim chief will also be named ahead of his departure.
On Saturday, a WRPS spokesperson confirmed to CityNews that Larkin has obtained a position with the RCMP.
RCMP later confirmed Larkin is being appointed Deputy Commissioner in Specialized Policing Services.
