Summer camp spots filling up in Waterloo Region

If you're interested in registering your kids for summer camps and/or programs, you better do so sooner than later. It appears camp registration is already near capacity for the City of Waterloo.
“Registration opened on March 9, and within a couple of days, we were already noticing full camp offerings,” said Nancy Hall-Jupp, supervisor of Community Leisure Programming with the City of Waterloo. “We're at about 93 or 94 per cent capacity, but we've been looking at our numbers, what our rooms can hold, what regulations are set out for us, and we're really hoping to start looking at our waitlist and getting kids into those camps.”
The city is offering a variety of camps, all of which can be found and registered for online.
Hall-Jupp said although masking and proof of vaccination is no longer required in city facilities, many COVID-19 protocols will remain, including sanitization and physical distancing where possible.
“We are reviewing the PPE that our staff will be wearing, and our sanitizing protocols will stay as frequent as it has been over the past two summers,” added Hall-Jupp. “A welcoming and safe environment will be provided for each camper … any parent that has any questions are certainly welcome to reach out to us, or put any protocol in place that will help with the safety of their children.”
Mask wearing is absolutely encouraged for those who wish to do so, and Hall-Jupp noted that outdoor activity is included in the program plans.
“When our walls are alive with the sounds of laughter and fun, that's what makes our job the best job in the world,” added Hall-Jupp. “Safety first, we'll make sure everyone feels safe when they're with us … we're very excited to welcome people again this summer.”
Meanwhile, YMCA of Three Rivers provided a written statement to CityNews 570 regarding its summer programs.
Campers, from ages 6 to 15, can enjoy many traditional camp activities through three overnight camps, which are about 60 per cent full.
The overnight camps include:
– Camp Ki-Wa-Y, just outside Waterloo
– Camp Belwood, in Fergus
– Camp Wabanaki, in Huntsville
11 day camps are also being offered. They're about 95 per cent full, and are located throughout Guelph, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Stratford.
