The City of Kitchener is planning to put 60 large-diameter trees in five of its parks.
Canadian National (CN) Railway and Tree Canada are both funding the tree planting program. The aim of CN EcoConnexions program, which the city was selected to participate in, is to plant 100,000 trees in Canada and the United States in 2021.
Kitchener's mayor was joined by other dignitaries for a tree planting ceremony at Rosenberg Park on Wednesday.
“As a rapidly growing city, it’s more important than ever that our residents have lush green spaces to enjoy. This partnership with CN and Tree Canada is an important step in promoting healthy tree cover in our parks – enhancing a critical natural resource.” said Berry Vrbanovic.
The city says the trees, to be purchased with the $25,000 grant, will be planted where they can have the greatest impact on tree coverage. They will also be placed along tree watering routes where possible to maximize watering efficiency.
As well, Kitchener is conducting an engagement survey on its long-term tree canopy targets (www.engagewr.ca/
