Local doctor urging vaccination to help reduce cases in kids

By Tim Herd

So far, in Waterloo Region, 74.25 per cent of those 12 and older have both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, as of August 11, there have been 1,341 confirmed cases as the delta variant.

With the delta variant remaining as the predominant strain in the region, Dr. Bruno DiGravio, head of pediatrics at Grand River Hospital said this has the potential to cause more cases in those who are not yet eligible for a vaccination.

“There is a likely possibility that the current delta variant, which is the cause of most infections in the United States, and is currently the major variant in Waterloo Region as well, may begin to impact children, and they may become ill, and have to hospitalize.”

So now, Dr. DiGravio is urging everyone who has not yet been vaccinated, to do so.

“The more people that are vaccinated, the less the virus can be transmitted, and the safer the children under the age of 12 who cannot yet be vaccinated will be.”

Dr. DiGravio added he hopes the COVID-19 vaccine will be approved for those under the age of 12.

“That can't come soon enough, and we're hoping that it will happen in the near future.”
