SASCWR denounces Jack the Ripper-inspired detective game

By Aastha Shetty

A city-wide virtual detective game coming to Kitchener has Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region feeling concerned by the game's references to Jack the Ripper.

Jessica St Peter from Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region said the game romanticises violence against women and minimizes the impact on the Ripper's victims.

“They're targeting our community and trying to connect the idea of coming together and engaging in fun and entertainment with an issue that perpetuates violence, normalizes violence and dehumanizes the victims of … this serial killer.

“The women who were murdered were people,” St Peter added. “They deserve to be recognized. That we talk about them, that we name them, that we don't continue to just name serial killers. We need to learn that we can be curious about mysteries, we can participate in adventures that don't have a violent nature attached to them.”

570 NEWS has reached out to the company behind the game, CluedUpp, for comment.
