New additions coming to Albert McCormick Community Centre

By Mark Pare

It's being called a “skateboarders paradise.”

The Albert McCormick Community Centre property in Waterloo will see plenty of construction this summer, after council voted in favour of a $2.2-million dollar project.

It will see the southern portion of the Parkside Drive property get things like a plaza-style skateboard park, splash pad, an all-ages climbing structure, accessible bankshot basketball court and much more.

“This new Neighbourhood Action Sports Park will be a skateboarders paradise, and the addition of a new splash pad, accessible basketball court, versatile playing surface and some attractive public art is something that will provide enjoyment for all residents,” said councillor Angela Vieth.

That public art will be in the form of outdoor benches, and local artisans are being asked to make reference to the artwork on display at the nearby ION crossing.

Work is expected to start this summer, and be substantially finished in the fall.

Officials are aiming for a grand opening to be held in spring 2021.
