Waterloo Fire encouraging virtual fireworks celebrations

Canada Day fireworks will look a bit different this year.

Many municipalities are going virtual to avoid large gatherings and Waterloo Fire Fighters are hoping you'll tune in online, instead of doing your own fireworks celebration.

According to Waterloo Fire, many Canadians are injured every year by misusing consumer fireworks – especially children.

They add these fireworks, if not handled properly can lead to structure and wildland fires.

Consumer fireworks include sparklers, firecrackers and bottle rockets.

“Canadians have adapted quickly to virtual alternatives in our efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Let's do the same with Canada Day fireworks celebrations this year so we can all celebrate this great country as safely as possible,” says Glen Downey, President, Waterloo Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 791.

Waterloo Fire officials add, many cities have banned the use of consumer fireworks this year.
