GRCA offering tree planting service for residents this spring

By Ariel Deutschmann

The Grand River Conservation Authority is asking residents who own one or two hectares of land around the watershed to consider planting trees this spring.

The GRCA's tree planting program is accepting orders for trees and shrubs now till the end of March.

A minimum order of 200 seedlings or 20 tall stock trees is needed to participate in the program, along with a non-refundable deposit of $50.

Residents who place a minimum order of 1,000 seedlings or 50 tall stock are eligible to receive help with planting from a GRCA forestry specialist for no extra cost.

A GRCA forestry specialist can also help design a custom planting plan, arrange for planting, and help residents access funding programs to offset any costs of tree planting projects.

The GRCA says those interested in speaking with a forestry specialist should contact the GRCA soon as wait times are possible.

According to a press release from the GRCA, private landowners own close to 80 per cent of the land in the watershed.

By participating in this event, the GRCA says these owners can make an immense contribution toward increasing tree coverage.

All tree orders will be available for pick up from the GRCA head officer in Cambridge between late April and early May.
