Ten Thousand Villages closing Waterloo store and others across Canada

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Ten Thousand Villages will be closing in a few months.

In a release, the company said, “It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the closure of the corporate operations of Ten Thousand Villages Canada,”

Their Waterloo store will be closing, along with nine others across the country, as well as their head office and distribution centre in New Hamburg, plus their webstore.

The Mennonite Central Committee says despite their best efforts, they were unable to achieve the level of sales that would continue to provide them with the ability to operate a sustainable business model.

Ten Thousand Villages has been in operation for 74 years and in that time, the MCC says they have empowered over 100,000 makers around the world to earn a fair and stable income.

The last of operation for the Waterloo store is expected to be May 29.

A selection of stores, operated by separate boards will remain open.
