Province almost tripling funding to Skills Catalyst Fund

By Phi Doan

The provincial government announced they would nearly triple a fund dedicated to training partnerships.

$20 million will be invested into the Skills Catalyst Fund, which was created back in January 2018.

Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, made the announcement at the offices of Communitech on Friday. He says there are many jobs available in the skilled trades, but not enough skilled workers to take them.

During the first round of the fund, it supported 20 training projects across Ontario, including the apprentice bootcamps at the Communitech Academy in Kitchener. 170 people were taught the basics of digital marketing, data science, artificial intelligence and other skills in the tech sector.

McNaughton also made mention of the success they found with the Ontario Masonry Training Centre partnering with various school boards to introduce masonry as a career option.

“This will be open right across the province. We know there are industries; there are businesses that really need help with creating innovative approaches to training. This is all about upscaling people and training workers for today and tomorrow.”

They expect to take applicants as soon as possible and announce the second round of the fund in spring 2020.
