Volunteer association makes record-breaking donation to St Mary’s General Hospital Foundation

The St Mary's Volunteer Association has made a record-breaking donation to the hospital foundation.
The $325,000 donation is the single-largest donation ever made to the St Mary's General Hospital Foundation by the hospital's volunteer association.
Susan Dusick, President of the St Mary's General Hospital Foundation, says the money will be used to replace the vital signs monitors at St. Mary's Hospital.
“We’ll be going to a full wireless system and one of the things that is integral to everything relative to patient care is a vital signs monitor. So if you think about it, it’s the one that’s taking your temperature, your blood pressure, and so on. They’re necessary in every department of the hospital, every in-patient unit, every out-patient clinic, et cetera. And of course, as a cardiac centre, you can imagine how important they are.”
She says donations from the community have always helped improve areas of need in the hospital.
“All the growth that we’ve had at St. Mary’s has been funded by the community. I mean just recently, $15-million has been raised in order to equip our new electrophysiology lab and now we’re waiting for the Ministry to step up and do their part to bring the operational funding and their part of the capital bill funding to the project.”
Dusick says donations help cover bases that the ministry doesn't have enough money to fund.
“So when it comes to the replacement and purchase of new equipment, new vital signs monitors, new beds in the hospital, replacement of beds, and our new catheterization suite, which we are in desperate need of – all those items are not funded by the ministry. So the actual equipment and a small portion of the construction costs are also not funded by the ministry.”
