Kitchener bylaw officers issue tickets over basketball nets

By Cali Doran

Two neighbours who share a basketball net have been forced to change their game.

The basketball net that has since been moved was once sitting on the boulevard between the two houses. The change comes after Kitchener bylaw officers handed out notices to residents with nets overhanging the road.

Gloria MacNeil is the Director of By-law Enforcement with the City of Kitchener. She says the notices came as a result of complaints from neighbours and city workers.

“The biggest concern that we experience with those basketball nets are in regards to the garbage trucks, plows and street sweepers. They have to come around and hug that curb line, and when the basketball nets are over hanging the roads they are often clipping those vehicles.”

She added the nets just need to be removed from the road after use. “This isn't about kids not being able to play basketball, it's just simply about asking the parents to wheel that back in once they have completed playing, and to not store it continuously on the boulevard.”

The current bylaw prohibits sports on any roadways, but MacNeil says that might change.

The City of Kitchener says the provision is now under review and a staff recommendation is expected to go back to council later this year.

MacNeil says as part of the recommendation they will discuss whether or not to allow equipment to be stored on the boulevard.
