City of Waterloo welcome sign is back

It's officially back!

The welcome sign for the City of Waterloo was unveiled Thursday for the first time since it was stored away three years ago for LRT construction.

Mayor Dave Jaworsky says the sign has always been an important landmark for City of Waterloo residents.

“It's all about place-making when it comes down to it. A place where citizens can be proud of their city — the City of Waterloo, and bring friends and see Uptown.”

Jaworsky says he predicts that the area will become a popular site for taking selfies.

“It was put away… before selfies were so much a thing. I think we are going to see people here all the time.”

The sign is located near the intersection of King Street S and Union Street E.

The sign was taken down in 2015 for LRT construction.

According to the City of Waterloo, it was placed inside a protective tomb for the last three years.
