Crossing guard approved for Kitchener roundabout (update)

A relief for parents who have children who attend Janet Metcalfe Public School on Seabrook Drive in Kitchener.

Kitchener City Council has approved putting a school crossing guard at the roundabout located at Fisher-Hallman Road and Seabrook Drive.

The school just opened a few weeks ago, and concerns were raised about students crossing at that roundabout.

While council did endorse the plan, they will review it each year.

The move will cost around $10,000 a year.

That crossing guard could be in place as early as next week.

The city will also work with the Region of Waterloo to look at other measures, including reducing the speed limit to 50 km/h, installing flashing beacons and cutting back some of the vegetation near the roundabout.

The motion was put forward by Ward 5 councillor, Kelly Galloway-Sealock.

“I am thrilled the crossing guard passed for the safety of the students at the roundabout.” she told KitchenerToday.

The Waterloo Region District School Board is also pleased a crossing guard will be placed at the roundabout.

“I know there's been concerns from parents, and really even staff, wanting to ensure that students feel confident crossing at that intersection, and that they're arriving to school safely.” WRDSB spokesperson, Alana Russell, told 570 NEWS.
