An appeal against a major development in the Galt area of Cambridge has been dropped, paving the way for the project to move ahead.
The Cambridge branch of the ACO (of Architectural Conservancy Ontario) has dropped its appeal against HIP Development's Gaslight District after the two sides were able to work out an agreement.
The ACO Cambridge were concerned that too much of the former Southworks foundry was being lost in the original plan,
“This site, dating from the 1890's, is one of Ontario's few remaining intact industrial complexes, we were concerned with the extent of the loss of the north building.” said local ACO branch president, Jeremy Hetherington.
Hetherington credits HIP Developments with working with them to find a solution, “Thanks to HIP's willingness to work with us, three times as much of the original building façade is being preserved compared to the original plan.” said Hetherington.
According to HIP President Scott Higgins, they are also happy with the results, “Without question the plan we have today, the heritage preservation and the active new street, is a better one than we had when we started the project designs several years ago.” said Higgins.
The case was set to appear the LPAT (formerly OMB) but since the agreement the meeting has been cancelled.
HIP says some demolition and restoration of the foundry will begin this month.
The $125 million project will feature two 20 story condo towers with mixed retail and office space on the ground level.
