Waterloo Lutheran Seminary officially Martin Luther University College

By Christine Clark

Waterloo Lutheran Seminary is now officially Martin Luther University College and has updated their logo.

The name change comes as the seminary looks to better represent who they have become as a school while still giving a nod to their 107 year history in our community.

Principal Dean Mark Harris tells 570 NEWS the name, Martin Luther University College or simply “Luther” allows them to better communicate to the wider community and their students who they are as a school.

“Back in 2013, it became apparent to our board of governors that the name no longer adequately reflected who we were becoming as an institution. Over the last 20-25 years we've become much more diversified in our program offerings and the students who were coming to us.”

Luther is the founding institution of Wilfrid Laurier University, and was a major player in the establishment of the University of Waterloo.

About 170 students are registered at Luther with around 300 students registered at Laurier, taking Luther courses as electives.

The new logo called “The Ringing Rose” gives a nod to the school's iconic bells in their bell tower and incorporates Martin Luther's symbol, the Luther Rose.
