Doon Public School closed Friday due to power outage

Students at a local public school had the day off on Friday due to a power outage.
The Waterloo Region District School Board announced on Twitter that Doon Public School in Kitchener would be shut down for the day due to an outage.
Nick Manning is Chief Communications Officer with the WRDSB, and says they were notified about the situation around 6:30 a.m.
“It’s not super unusual, we have power outages from time to time, but through a further investigation with the hydro company, we learned that it was due a downed power line in the area, and possibly on the school’s property. So the time it would take to fix the downed power line, it would’ve caused a problem for heating for most of the day, so we had to make the decision to close the school.”
Manning says they’re not sure if weather played a factor.
“We haven’t heard yet, obviously we were on high alert this morning to take a look at the weather conditions and see whether we had to make any changes. But we currently don’t know if the power line was down due to weather, or if it was because of another cause.”
Manning says luckily, no other schools were affected, and neither was school bus service.
“Our school bus operators do a great job of navigating our kids to school. There are times in the year where it gets a little tricky for them, but I think this morning, although it was cold and icy, they did a great job of getting our kids to school today.”
Manning adds that Doon Public School with be toasty and warm, and ready for learning again on Monday.
Meantime, KW Hydro tells 570 NEWS that at this time, they’re not sure what brought down the power line. They say it may have been a tree branch, but they are still investigating, and cannot confirm that it was due to weather conditions.
No other major power outages were reported in their jurisdiction during that time frame.
