Provincial Liberals launch website for platform ideas in Kitchener

The provincial government is seeking ideas for Premier Kathleen Wynne’s next election platform.
The Ontario Liberal Party launched a virtual suggestion box in Kitchener on Saturday. The website — called ‘Common Ground’ — invites Ontarians to share policy ideas that will ultimately be used as planks in Wynne’s next campaign for the top job at Queen’s Park.
The Premier kicked off the launch at The Tannery Centre, and describes it as democracy at work.
“There are still people that don’t have what they need, so by definition there’s more for us to do, and that means we need all the best ideas,” says Wynne. “For me, that’s what Common Ground is about. It’s about opening up the [policy] process and building on what we’ve done up until now.”
Amalgamate school boards; sell marijuana at mom and pop shops; provide free dental care for seniors — these are just some of the ideas that have already been submitted on Common Ground.
Ontario Liberal Party platform co-chair and GTA MPP Yvan Baker says you can submit suggestions online until December, at which point you can take part in an online survey on the top ideas and how important it is for them to be included in the party platform.
“People will be able to track the ideas, they’ll be able to see who’s submitted which ideas, the votes that they’ve received,” Baker says. “So people will be able to see how we’ve listened, and how we’ve incorporated that as part of the platform itself.”
