Black garbage cart exchange to start in October

It’s been just over half a year since the first black and green waste carts were rolled to the end of driveways in Waterloo Region for the start of the new collection system.
In just a few weeks, residents will be able to request a different black cart size.
The exchange only applies to the black garbage carts, with residents able to swap a small 120L bin for a large 240L bin or vice versa.
To request a different cart size, residents can head online or call officials directly 519-575-4400 starting Oct 5.
The exchange requests will be accepted until the end of October, with the swap itself taking place throughout November.
“Exchanges are completed directly at your property,” read the Region’s website.
“You do not need to bring your cart anywhere for the exchange to take place.”
Residents do not have the option to change their green cart size. If additional green carts are needed, they can be purchased for $150 each starting on Oct. 5.
Additional black garbage carts are not for sale. Bag tags however can be purchased for extra garbage bags set out beside the black carts.
If you’re not looking to change your cart, but it has already been damaged from regular use, it has a 10-year warranty and the Region will replace it for free.
Residents can inquire about a new cart at any time for that issue.
