Six locals charged after police seize 1.5 kg of suspected fentanyl

Half a dozen people from Waterloo Region have been charged in connection with a massive drug and weapons bust.

Police say six locals, and one from Durham, have been charged after search warrants were used at multiple locations across the region.

Through those searches, officers seized a number of drugs and firearms — including $450,000 worth of suspected fentanyl.

Superintendent Patrick Dietrich says Regional Police started investigating about five months ago.

“The arrests relate to a lengthy, complex investigation, which really was a culmination of two investigations. One had a drug and fentanyl focus, and the other had a firearm and drug focus. As a result of that, we executed six search warrants on Tuesday — four in Kitchener, one in Cambridge, and one in the Town of Durham.”

Dietrich says they made some significant seizures.

“Probably the most significant was the 1.5 kilograms of suspected fentanyl.. but we also seized a half kilogram of methamphetamine valued at $40,000, some replica firearms, prohibited weapons, stolen vehicles, and cash. We also seized six long guns.”

Dietrich says they will be testing all of the drugs for fentanyl, as it continues to be a deep concern throughout Canada, and locally.

“This is a crisis. Sadly, in October, we’ve seen an uptick in fatal overdoses. This month so far, we’ve seen eight.”

Dietrich adds that in relation to this latest investigation, more arrests are anticipated.

“There was another arrest last night, that person has not yet appeared in court, but will appear today. We do anticipate at least a couple more arrests, and possibly even more than that.”

Police say those charged include:

  • Ashley Lauren Broderick, 29, of Kitchener
  • Daniel Timothy Foreman, 38, of Kitchener
  • Dayna Lynn Karges, 46, of Kitchener
  • Luke Adam Martin, 32, of Kitchener
  • Cassandra Lyn Sangers, 22, of Kitchener
  • Nicholas William Schmidt, 26, of Cambridge
  • Matthew Duncan Fuller, 33, of Durham
