Rangers part ways with coach Barnaby

Sitting in first place in the Western Conference, the Kitchener Rangers have fired a member of their coaching staff.

The Rangers announced late Tuesday evening they’ve parted ways with Assistant Coach Matthew Barnaby.

“Philosophical differences,” General Manager Mike McKenzie cited as the reasoning.

Barnaby was hired in June of 2016, just over a month after his friend, Jay McKee, was promoted to Head Coach, taking over the reins from Mike Van Ryn.

Barnaby had a playful, but respected relationship with the players, which many believe is a good trait as an assistant coach.

The move comes just five games into the season for the Blueshirts, who brought in Andreas Karlsson to fill the void of departed Jason Fortier.

As for what’s next, “Nothing right now,” said McKenzie.

“We’ll take our time and evaluate things as we go, but there’s no immediate plan.”
