Mayor of Guelph speaks out about vandalized churches

A church just north-west of Guelph has been vandalized with what Wellington County OPP are calling “Islamic State messaging.”

It happened sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

OPP say the unknown suspects spray painted the side of Lakeside Church on Conservation Drive, near Guelph Lake.

Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie took to twitter asking with anyone with information to come forward.

Guthrie also has a message from the church saying, They forgive the culprit, but they will remain vigilant to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

This is the second time this month that a Guelph church has been targeted with hateful graffiti.

In early August Guelph’s Seventh-Day Adventist Church was tagged with a racial slur targeting the black community.

Guthrie came out with a statement after that incident saying, “This type of disgraceful and cowardly act has no place in our city.”

Wellington County OPP and Guelph Police are asking anyone with information about either incident to step forward and call 1-888-310-1122.
