Waterloo students receive funds for their high tech ideas

Ten lucky students just got a big boost to their start-ups.
This year, the Velocity Fund Finals at the University of Waterloo gave out over $125,000 in cash.
This year’s winner of the big $25,000 prize was Frost Armour.
An innovative product designed to protect crops from frost damage.
Another company Altius Analytics Labs developed a new mobile oxygen backpack to take the place of the oxygen tank.
John Shah, Director of the Velocity Fund says some of the competitions previous winners many go on to contribute to the local economy.
“The vast majority of companies do headquarter in the region they often do sell to global markets, which is what we want to do. But they are headquarters here in the Waterloo region.”
The Velocity Fund runs every year thanks a million dollar grant from Kik co-founder Ted Livingston.
