A local MP is back from a trip to China.
Bardish Chagger joined Governor General David Johnston on one of his final official visits to the People’s Republic.
The Waterloo Region could reap the benefits of Chagger’s visit, which is meant to showcase Canada as a tourist destination.
Minister of Small Business and Tourism Bardish Chagger says the Governor General’s trip was meant to elevate Canada’s relationship with China in areas such as trade, education, and tourism.
She says a memorandum of understanding was signed between one of China’s largest online retailers and Destination Canada to promote Canadian consumer products available online.
She says another important dimension of the visit was to highlight educational exchanges.
Chagger says when it comes to Waterloo Region, “We have many businesses that are doing business with China within the region, and we also have three fabulous post-secondary institutions over 6,000 Chinese nationals come to study here.”
Chagger adds the trip was a success.
