Wellington County OPP hand out 70 speeding related charges over the long weekend

There were 23 collisions on OPP patrolled roadways in Wellington County over the Canada Day long weekend. Police say most of those were fender benders or people not paying attention.
Here’s a run-down of the numbers:
- 70 Speeding charges
- 26 Seatbelt charges
- 1 Distracted Driving charge
- 5 Hazardous Moving Violations
- 21 Other Highway Traffic Act charges
- 2 Liquor Licence violations
- 1 Insurance charge
- 2 Impaired Drivers
- 4 Marine offences
Constable Marylou Schwindt tells 570 NEWS the most concerning thing was drivers not moving over for police. “The most concerning thing for me aside from the speed-related charges was the number of drivers not moving over for our officers during a traffic stop. There is legislation in place to make sure they’re safe when they do their job, and it was alarming how many officers reported close calls. It needs to stop.”
Wellington County OPP handed out 132 Highway Traffic Act related charges over the Canada Day long weekend.
