19-year-old drowns in Lake Simcoe on Canada Day

A reminder to use extra caution if you’re out near the water this long weekend, after a fatal incident in Lake Simcoe.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says it happened Saturday afternoon, when two men were out swimming near Sibbald Point Provincial Park.

“A group of men were out in the water, when one of them panicked and became distressed. Another male went to assist, and they both experienced distress and went underwater.”

Both victims were pulled from the lake, and CPR was performed before paramedics arrived.

“The first male was able to be revived, and is okay. The second was not able to be revived, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

Schmidt says they can’t release the man’s name, but he has been identified as a 19-year-old from Toronto.
