Police urge drivers to drive safe this long weekend

It is finally the long weekend, and many of us will be heading to the cottage, the beach or maybe just visiting some local parks to enjoy the warm weather.
Although most of us are in vacation mode, police forces around Canada will be on high-alert for dangerous drivers.
“The Canadian Association Chiefs of Police, through the Traffic Safety Committee, have it designated as Saturday, May 20 as National Road Safety Day, in which they’re encouraging all police services across Canada to target the big four killers – that’s distracted driving and cellphone use, speed, seatbelt use, and obviously impaired driving whether it’s alcohol or drug,” explains Sergeant John Van Breda with Waterloo Regional Police.
On top of the Big Four, police are saying we should give ourselves extra time when heading out anywhere, because long weekends mean one thing, traffic.
“Patience, is going to be the number one, you know frustration leads to people driving in an erratic manner, doing things they wouldn’t normally do, so give yourself lots of time, increase that stopping distance between you and the vehicles in front.”
Now, the weekend is also supposed to see some warm temperatures and pockets of sunshine.
“Watch for motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians out there,” adds Sergeant Van Breda.
