Police to end free funeral escorts

Waterloo Regional Police are going to stop doing funeral escorts for free.

It turns out, WRPS are the only police service in the province that still provides them at no cost.

That is among a number of services that will have a price tag or a bigger price tag this year.

It would save $500,000 a year.

WRPS say they average 150 police funeral escorts a year.

There’s also a plan to raise the cost of police record checks by $10, raising the total cost to $40.

Approval is expected to happen at May’s police services board meeting.
