Closures take effect in Ira Needles area of Waterloo

Expect some delays in the Ira Needles Boulevard area of Waterloo over the weekend.
The Region of Waterloo says their contractor is continuing work on the widening of Ira Needles from just south of Thorndale Drive to Chablis Drive, as well as the construction of a new roundabout at Thorndale Drive and Ira Needles.
Frank Kosa is Project Manager with the Region and says the roadwork all kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m., as paving gets underway at the Thorndale Roundabout at Ira Needles and also on the NB lanes of Ira needles from Thorndale to Erb.
“Friday night starting at about 6 p.m. there will be paving at the Thorndale roundabout and at the piece between Thorndale and Erb Street. That will involve the closure of Ira Needles between University and Erb Street. Also on the Friday night between 8 p.m. and midnight there is a milling operation planned at the Erb Street roundabout– so that roundabout will be closed during that time.”
Kosa adds that you should prepare for a slow commute as the work continues on Saturday evening.
“On Saturday at 6 p.m., they will be paving at the Erb Street roundabout and again between Erb Street and the Thorndale roundabout. There will be another closure on Ira Needles between Erb and University, including the roundabout at Erb Street. That closure will stay in effect until about noon on Sunday, at which point the Erb Street roundabout will be opened up– but the closure on Ira Needles will remain in place on Sunday until about 6 p.m.”
The Region says the closures will be in place as they complete surface course paving and final pavement marking placement– and that most of the paving is planned for the evenings and over the weekend to minimize access and commuter traffic disruptions.
The Region also warns that this work is weather dependent, and says some of the days/times may be changed if there are wet conditions.

Ira Needles closed between University and Erb from 6 pm to 12 pm.
NB detour — Ira Needles to University to Fischer Hallman to Erb to Ira Needles.
SB detour — Erbsville to Erb to Fischer Hallman to University to Ira Needles.
Saturday the 22nd:
Erb Street at Ira Needles Roundabout closed between 6 pm and 12 pm.
