More problems at Bombardier could mean more delays with light rail transit construction in our region.
Bombardier has been taking heat for production problems related to light rail vehicles and quality problems for Toronto streetcars and Metrolinx is still waiting for a light rail prototype Bombardier promised to deliver earlier this month after missing a previous deadline.
Regional Councillor Tom Galloway tells 570 News that there are some concerns surrounding the delays at the manufacturer.
“Until we actually see a vehicle, the first one in December hopefully, we have to just kind of play it by ear because Bombardier unfortunately has not be able to deliver to schedule, not just on our contract but on other contracts as well.”
He adds that construction will continue as normal regardless.
“Grandlinq is a couple months behind but we do have that in the project schedule, they need to get the vehicles and fit them out and test them. If we get our first one in December, they’ll be able to start that process. (…) Completion of the construction is really not contingent on receiving vehicles.”
The LRT launch date has already been pushed to early 2018 instead of late 2017.
“They are putting some things in place that hopefully will change their production problems in the past. But until we see a vehicle in our community, we do have to be a little bit skeptical.”
The region can go after Bombardier for the late delivery of trains, up to $1,500 per day, per train up to $3.3 million.
