OPP take over Kitchener murder investigation

A murder investigation at a long-term care home in Kitchener has been turned over to the Ontario Provincial Police.

Waterloo Region Crown Attorney, Mark Poland says the decision was made as a result of the fact that the early part of the investigation revealed that a senior Waterloo Regional Police officer shared a familial relationship with key parties directly associated with the case.

A 56-year-old man was found dead at peopleCare AR Goudie on Frederick Street at 9:30pm on Monday, March 7th.

32-year-old Adam McCabe is facing a charge of second degree murder.

Sergeant Peter Leon with OPP says they will be taking over the investigation.

“As a result the Crown Attorney in Waterloo Region, made a request of the OPP through the Waterloo Regional Police Service to have the OPP take carriage of this investigation from this point forward.”

“The decision to request our partners from the OPP to continue this investigation was based on transparency” said Waterloo Regional Police Chief, Bryan Larkin. “We respect the judicial process and are accountable to the community. The potential perception of bias was eliminated immediately.”

Leon with OPP says this type of situation is rare but not unusual.

“As Chief Larkin has indicated, the decision to request the OPP to carry out the investigation was based upon transparency and respect for the judicial process. I think that shows the accountability that the Waterloo Regional Police Service has to its community.”

A publication ban has been placed on the case.

Leon says they head back to court via video on Wednesday.
