The Kitchener Rangers will host the Guelph Storm Tuesday night in their 21st annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
It will be an even bigger game than usual, especially for local charities.
Fans who attend are being asked to bring a new or gently loved teddy bear to throw onto the ice immediately following the Rangers first goal of the game. They will then be collected and redistributed to less fortunate members of our community.
One charity that will benefit from the teddy bear toss is the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.
Brian Draves is the Canadian Tire dealer located at 1400 Ottawa Street South in Kitchener and one of the main organizers from Canadian Tire for the Teddy Bear Toss.
Draves tells 570 News where the bears go after they are tossed onto the ice: “They are distributed to various charities within the community. Some go to the hospitals, some go to the police, some go to the fire department to various emergency providers who might come across a child who is in stress or distress and needs a teddy bear to snuggle to.”
Canadian Tire Jumpstart program is in its tenth year and has now helped over a million children participate in organized sports including 11,300 right here in Waterloo Region.
Over the last 20 years, Rangers fans have generously donated an incredible total of 111,554 bears for local charitable groups.
Teddy bears will be available for pickup on a first come, first served basis in the Zamboni bay of the Aud on Wednesday, December 9th at 8 a.m.
570’s Chris Pope spoke with Rangers General Manager Murray Hiebert ahead of the game.
Listen to Tuesday’s game on 570 News, the pre-game show starts at 6:35pm.
