Kitchener’s Varga one step closer to making Colts’ NFL roster

Tyler Varga’s NFL dream is still alive.

The former Cameron Heights star has survived the Indianapolis Colts’ first major round of cuts, making the team’s 75-man roster, and he only has one more round of cuts to go.

Varga joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent after playing running back at Yale (and briefly, at the University of Western Ontario), and he has wasted no time in making an impression with the team.

The 21-year-old Kitchener native scored his first NFL touchdown this past weekend against the St. Louis Rams on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter, earning praise after the game from veteran running back Frank Gore.

In three preseason games so far, Varga — who’s listed by the Colts as 5’11” and 225 lbs. — has nine carries for 32 yards, three catches for 19 yards, and two kickoff returns for 54 yards.

Local football fans have taken notice.

Varga will have to wait until Saturday to hear his fate — that’s the NFL’s deadline for when teams must trim their rosters to a final total of 53 players.
