A number of female comedians have come forward telling their stories of harassment on stage. Jen Grant says she was sexually harassed during a set at a corporate event. Grant, originally from Ottawa, was performing in Toronto at a country club. She says three minutes into her 45-minute set, a male interrupted her and said, “There’s a 51 per cent chance that my buddy here will have sex with you. and I will take the other 49 per cent,” she wrote on her blog. Since then, a number of male comedians have come out in support of Grant and other female comedians who say they experience harassment on stage. As Kevin Dooley writes, “THERE IS NO DOUBLE STANDARD. I’ve been doing comedy for about a decade now. I’ve told jokes in a lot of weird bars. I’ve never felt scared, never felt objectified, was never once worried about an audience member physically dominating me in any way after a show. If I get heckled it’s about my joke being shitty, not about anything else. Because I am a man.” Dooley joins us now to share the reasons why he felt compelled to come out in support of Grant.
12:30 – Rwanda Student set to graduate Laurier
In studio: Hippolyte Mugisha, a former refugee from Rwanda
An amazing story of perseverance – Laurier student Hippolyte Mugisha is a former refugee from Rwanda who overcame enormous hardships. He’s set to graduate June 11 with a BA in Economics and Financial Management and a spot on the Dean’s Honour Roll. Mugisha was living in a crowded refugee camp when he applied to a World University Service of Canada program that picked a handful of promising students annually to study in Canada. He had no phone, no e-mail or FaceBook – so had to check every day if he made the list – and cried when he saw his name. Mugisha hasn’t seen him family since 2011…they will live stream the graduation ceremony in Malawi to see him graduate.
