Canada has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world, and each year local MS walks take place to raise important funds for research and support.
Locally, walks are taking place in Kitchener, Cambridge and Guelph and combined raise $240,000 each year.
Kim Kay with the MS Society’s local chapter tells 570 News it is an important event because they do not receive funding from the government.
“We have over 150 walks taking place across Canada, 50 of those are in Ontario alone. This is really how we start off or year, every year, to support our mission to help people in our communities live better with MS.”
Kay adds the money raised goes to support much needed research because there is currently no cure for the disease.
“Every dollar raise goes towards our mission and it’s all raised by us at the MS Society and by you out there in the community. It something that really spearheads the much needed research for us to find the cure for multiple sclerosis and also helps support the people in our community.”
Walks begin at 8:30 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Secondary School in Kitchener, at Preston Memorial Auditorium in Cambridge and at College Heights Secondary School in Guelph.
