11:00 – Judge Rules – vaccinate

A Brantford judge has ordered a ten year old girl to be vaccinated against measles – despite her mother’s wishes – and arguments against the vaccine. Those arguments include:
-’Most diseases today are very rare or are considered mild.’
-’There are unmistakable links between vaccines and severe reactions, including autism and meningitis’
– ‘Most diseases were due to conditions of overcrowding, lack of sanitation and poor hygiene, all of which are not a risk today.’
The judge sided with the girl’s father – who shares joint custody with the mother. Brantford Superior Court Justice R. John Harper ruled that the girl, who is going on a family trip to Germany later this month – be given a vaccination for measles, mumps and rubella, and whatever else her Doctor recommends. The Mother’s lawyer, Gloria Ichim told the star that “To vaccinate or not is a medical conclusion that should be made by the patient in consultation with their medical professionals, NOT imposed by the court.” Reporter Jacques Gallant has been covering the story and joins us now to discuss.

55 cultural heritage landscapes have been identified in the city of Kitchener – and they are going to be preserved for future generations. The planning and strategic initiatives committee oversaw the Kitchener Cultural Heritage Landscapes Study – which was about two years in the making. The CHL’s (Cultural Heritage Landscapes) include neighbourhoods, parks, roadways, and institutional landscapes that have cultural heritage significance to the city and its residents. Some specific examples identified in the study include: Victoria Park neighbourhood and Victoria Park, Rockway and Doon Valley Golf courses, Huron Road, Trussler Road, Freeport Hospital, Woodside National Historic Site and the 500 Stauffer Dr. farmstead.
11:40 – Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! Lots of local activities going on around Waterloo Region…including a 20 minute make-over today at 2 pm. Businesses in Kitchener have registered – and city staff will be out as well – cleaning up the areas around city hall and their workplaces. Earth Day celebrations extend into the weekend – this Saturday from 1-4 at Huron Natural Area on Trillium Drive. Activities include live demonstrations of birds of prey by the Canadian Raptor Conservancy, birdhouse building and tree planting.
